Hello and welcome to another week in joy. It was a good, if interesting, week. Quitting twitter and weed in the same week (two weeks ago) is something that’s really starting to come into full focus now. The impotent rageful anger I was expressing on twitter has dissipated. The toxic cloud inside my head is gone. I have more energy and a clearer head. Not saying quitting weed is for everyone or that pot isn’t wonderful; I was just smoking way too much and too often and decided to lay off for a while. Now I feel like I purged my brain of everything that was clouding it up. I’m more attuned with the world now and everything in it.
Let’s move on to the good stuff. This week is all about media consumption.
If you know me at all, you know I am a sucker for Yacht Rock. This documentary is amazing. What a great time I had watching this. So much Steely Dan! Highly recommend. I spent time with on Friday and the time just zoomed by. Compelling storytelling backed with great music, what could be better than that?
I went on a watching binge this week after not being able to complete a movie for years. Suddenly I have the desire to watch all of the things. Movies/shows I watched this week alone:
*Yacht Rock documentary
*The Holdovers, for the third time. It is now my all time favorite movie
*A Boy Named Charlie Brown, Snoopy Come Home. They were on AMC at 2am and I couldn’t look away. That baritone “NO DOGS ALLOWED” is something I quote often
*Violent Night. A sweet Christmas movie that just so happens to be filled with death, violence, family treachery, blood and guts. It’s funny and quick and the ation never stops.
*Hot Frosty. A Netflix Christmas movie, this one is badly written, terribly plotted, horribly acted and I enjoyed it (even though I don’t think Frosty was that hot).
*Airplane! Jim Abrahams, who wrote this movie, passed away last week and I watched in his honore. Lost county of how many times I’ve seen it and it holds up well.
*The Great Outdoors. It was on the Family Channel and I caught it at the beginning so left it on. John Candy was/is an international treasure.
I bought some records this week from a guy who was selling his collection. Went to his house and thumbed through his albums. He had some amazing stuff that I’ll go back for some day if he still has them, but this was my haul
The Brand New album (upper left) completes their discography. The Misfits is a 1997 repressing that sounds amazing. The Modest Mouse was on my list. Overall, a great haul I’m glad to add to my collection.
It’s December so it’s officially Christmas music season. Took out one of my favorites and brought the season to a magnificent start.
Wonderful, joyful, incredibly fun album. I also started listening to my Christmas Treats playlist, which is chock full of classics, covers, and newer stuff. There’s something for every mood and listening to this brings me great joy, even when shuffle serves me up Phoebe Bridgers singing about how no one can fix her problems because it’s Christmas.
In non media joy, we had a lovely Thanksgiving, and once again was sent a photo f Natalie in here turkey suit, which brings me untold pleasure. Just love to see her thriving in L.A.
That’s Miss Moneypenny with her.
That’s it for this week. I’m getting down to crunchtime with my website and I’ve got to buckle down. I’m launching in nine days, so I don’t know how much you’ll see of me on this space in the next week. Here’s the list on Spotify because Apple Music doesn’t propagate here. If you want this for Apple let me know and I’ll send you the link.
Thanks for reading. Happy December, and try to find the joy. It helps!
John Candy was indeed a treasure. I met him while shooting The Great Outdoors (I was an extra). He was a mensch. Ackroyd, while very talented, was a jerk.
Brand New's The Devil and God is going to be Interscope's vinyl of the month for February - very excited to see what that'll look like - my copy has been used and abused and in need of an upgrade
