Thanks for writing this. You beautifully described a truly hellish environment. I got a every tiny taste of dealing with the public while being a supermarket cashier. Never again! Switched to dictaphone typing.
Like everywhere else, almost all the record stores in my area have closed. I think the couple hanging on are tax-loss vanity projects. Like used book stores. The owner has fun chatting with the handful of people who come in and doesn't have to make any money. The store's an offset for a lot if income elsewhere.
I remember it well. In 76-77, I managed Jimmy’s Music World stores in Oceanside and East Meadow. The holiday season was exhausting. Then I went to J&R in the City and it was worse. Kinda loved it, though. Yelled at a customer for very little reason, and he handed me two joints and wished me a Merry Christmas. Where else do you get that?
J&R in East Meadow was my store during those years! We have probably seen each other! You don't happen to remember the snowstorm when George Thorogood was supposed to show up and didn't, do you? This was like 77 but might have been 78
yes i meant Jimmy's. It was definitely 1978 because I matched it up with a major snowstorm that year. I actually wrote on this newsletter about the incident

Fun if you can afford it!
Was this Sunrise Mall? At first I thought so, but I don’t remember a Houlihan’s inside the mall.
Roosevelt Field
Thanks. Great memories of LI malls in the late 70s and early 80s. Really enjoy your writing.

You mean Jimmy’s, right? I think I was in Oceanside for that storm.
Actually, it must have been 1978, when George played My Father’s Place in Roslyn. I’d left Jimmy’s by then.
