“A Decade of Steely Dan” was the gateway album/cassette/CD for just about my entire crew in college in the mid-late ‘80s. Not everyone dove in and listened to the individual releases, but, everyone played this one over and over. Just seeing the CD case brings me back to a very specific time. I never quite understood the “yacht rock” moniker, though. Or, at the very least, the Dan’s particular vessel was one of the oddest seafaring listens imaginable.
I have two (ok 5) books that have been given to me in the last 2 years. I even bought Calcaterra’s book. They all seem good enough. Like I could read them in the bathroom at least. But nope, I just can’t.
Steely Dan and “banger after banger” don’t really go together in my head, but hey, that’s music for ya! I’ve long wondered how you have so much time to listen to and get so deeply involved in the music you listen to. I just don’t have the open-mindedness for every bit of music that floats my way, I think. I dunno. I started reading again last Thanksgiving after really minimal bouts of reading over the last decade. It’s a great joy, even when it isn’t amazing. And it helps inspire me to write, and to think about my writing and telling stories. Great fun! I hope work brings the joy that it can, which may not be joy, necessarily, but I bet after so long away, could be joyful all the same!
